Rarotonga

Rarotonga MapRarotonga is the capital island of Cook Islands and is the location for the International Airport and main town of Avarua. It is a relatively small island of immense beauty, with a craggy highland interior lush with rainforests and easily accessible white beaches around the coastline. Rarotonga offers a wide range of accommodation, from budget motels and guest houses, to self-catering vacation rental homes, 5-star luxury villas and all-inclusive resorts. The domestic airline of Air Rarotonga runs local flights to other beautiful islands and atolls in Cook Islands, including the famous and beautiful Aitutaki.

Rarotonga Attractions include activities both on land and in the water. Enjoy snorkelling in the beautiful lagoon that encircles the island. Swimming, beach relaxation, kayaking, glass bottom boat tours are also available, as well as scuba diving trips and fishing charters. On land enjoy cycling, golf (near Avarua), black pearl shops and museum (Avarua). There is also a cross-island hike - a wonderful experience. The inner landscape offers birdwatching opportunities and beautiful waterfalls. Picturesque Muri Beach and Muri Lagoon on the eastern side of the island offers many watersports activities.

Information about Rarotonga: The island is roughly circular and a sealed road runs all around the coast. There is a public bus service (travelling in both directions) making it very easy to get around. If you are visiting Rarotonga it is also possible to hire a scooter or car. Resorts and hotels are dotted all around the coast, with access to the white sand beaches and fringing lagoon. The main town of Avarua has shops, restaurants, cafes, businesses, offices and museum. There is also a harbour.
