Aitutaki Island

Aitutaki MapUndoubtedly, Aitutaki is one of the top travel destinations in the South Pacific, with accommodation ranging from budget to luxury, suitable for general vacation, honeymoon or island wedding. Aitutaki comprises several volcanically formed islands (including the main island of Aitutaki) plus many smaller coral islets known as 'motu'. The islands and motu surround a huge inner lagoon, so large that the entire island of Rarotonga (Cook Islands capital island) could fit in the middle. The vast, shallow, clear waters of the lagoon provide a stunning vista for vacationers.

Aitutaki Lagoon Attractions: The vast clear warm waters of the Aitutaki Lagoon are ideal for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling. Most resorts and hotel accommodation operators in Aitutaki offer lagoon day trips with snorkelling opportunities and lunch on an idyllic deserted beach of one of the small motu (islets). Scuba Diving and Fishing Tours are also available to those visiting Aitutaki. On the main island one can also enjoy biking, hiking and visiting sites of interest.

Information about Aitutaki: When Polynesians first arrived to Cook Islands thousands of years ago, the Aitutaki atoll was their first landfall. The Teal flying boats that carried passengers across the South Pacific in the early days used to stop at Aitutaki lagoon en route across the South Pacific. The main town is Arutanga. A small airstrip is located to the north of the island.
